Former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee Passes Away

Former President Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee died at 84, on Monday, 31st August 2020. He was cremated with state honours at the Lodhi Road crematorium on Tuesday, 1st September 2020. Seven days of mourning has been announced by the centre to pay respects for the former president of India. Mr Mukherjee's ashes were immersed in the Ganga on Tuesday, 1st September 2020 by his son Abhijit Mukherjee. The Army Research and Referral hospital in New Delhi was where Mr Mukherjee got admitted. He got admitted on the 10th of august, he also had to undergo a surgery on the same day for the removal of a clot in his brain.

Pranab Mukherjee had been in a coma since early august after his brain surgery, he had also tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The doctors mentioned that he had also developed a renal dysfunction and a lung infection. During Mr Mukhrejee's decades' long political career he has served in the cabinet for several Prime ministers and has also served as a Member of the parliament seven times. Mr Mukherjee had worked under Indira Gandhi, Narasimha Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh. Mr Mukherjee during his tenure as the finance minister had introduced financial plans both before and after the 1991 monetary changes and also changes in the permit grant raj system. In 2012 he was elected as the President of India. He is also a Bharat Rathna (2018) and a Padma Vibushan (2008) awardee. He played a pivotal role in making important decisions during the worldwide financial emergency of 2008 which majorly helped stabilise the Indian economy. Leaders from all over the World offered their condolences to the former president of India.

"Sad to hear that former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee is no more. His demise is the passing of an era. A colossus in public life, he served Mother India with the spirit of a sage. The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons. Condolences to his family, friends & all citizens. Endowed with perspicacity and wisdom, Bharat Rathna Shri Mukherjee combined tradition and modernity. In his 5 decades long illustrious public life, he remained rooted to the ground irrespective of the exalted offices he held. He endeared himself to people across the political spectrum," President Ram Nath Kovind said in a message.
