“A woman with a PCOS history of three years is now going to be a mother! An old woman with a heart condition has lost 7 kilograms over the last two months! - all without western medicine”.

These statements are not fictional miracles but factual events as reported by Dr Nikitha (BAMS) - a consultant Ayurvedic Doctor at the Chandralayout Branch, one of 16 branches of Shathayu Ayurveda in South India.

In the year 1901, Vaidya Ratna Ramayya Swamy created Shathayu Ayurveda with an intention of providing effective & economical healthcare services to people. Even though Shathayu mainly offers massages and spa treatments for relaxation and indulgence, their main motive is to make Ayurveda, the evidence based Indian system of medicine as the mainstream medical system in India; treating people on the fundamentals of Ayurvedic science derived 5000 years ago.

The main services offered by Shathayu Ayurveda are massages like Abhyanga (massage of oils), Udvarthana (massage of powder), Mardhana (massage with medicated oil). These massages can be recreational or doctor prescribed for specific ailments

.

Notably, Shathayu has well researched, and specific programs for the following ailments: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, infertility, obesity, skin disorders, migraines, joint pain etc. Their range of solutions go from something as simple as treating teen acne, to solving strokes in elders. They also have an ayurvedic alternative for diabetes medication which is prescribed by the resident consultant only when suitable for the patient.

“Personalised solutions based on Specific Individual Symptom study is what we opt for. After studying the patient’s set of problems, we craft a unique case specific combination of consumables and treatments,” said Dr Nikitha when asked about why their reviews always point at efficiency. She added that taking one treatment has a positive effect on overall health, as one finds extra benefits from the treatment added onto the ones prescribed to treat ailment. For example, if a person is prescribed with Udvarthana massages for weight loss, they also enjoy the benefits of skin firming, spinal relaxation, muscle relaxation and blood circulation as they lose weight.

What is also famous is their detoxification programmes of 10-15 days called ‘Panchakarma-Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshan’ which Dr Nikitha recommends taking up during June-August for best results. Virechana under Panchakarma includes the ingestion of medicated ghees (case specific for diseases) which is popular especially among women with infertility diseases due to the success rate of treatment of admitted in the category.

Although allopathic medicine is widely practiced and assures fast resolution of diseases, we need to study the side effects and finances of the same. Fortunately, Indian Ayurvedic methods have proved time and again to replace the allopathic chemicals in fighting pathology.
